Debary Elementary School First Grade

The focus of this page is to provide you with guidelines for our grading policies. We use a standards based grading system--meaning we assess students according to the skills we are teaching.  In first grade we constantly assess through a variety of assessments whether they be informal such as teacher observation, formal assessments (weekly quizzes), or summative assessments (unit tests).  We are also required to give district assessments quarterly like DRA and FAIR, and writing prompt. We do this so that we can closely monitor your student and make sure we meet their academic needs.

The skills we focus on are outlined for us in our curriculum maps. A copy of the curriculum maps are provided for you as a link on our website. Please know that there is A LOT of curriculum to cover and we do an excellent job covering the material outlined for us. Therefore it is extrememly important that families follow up on the skills that we will be working on in class at home. We move at a fast pace and do expect for skills to be mastered by the end of the year. As mentioned on our home page we do provide instruction at all levels and ensure that students receive on-level, remedial, and enrichment services based on the skills we are focusing on.

Grades and attendance can be accessed on Pinacle-- our county's online grading system. Please be sure to have your login information set up and kept in a safe place. As teachers we do not access to this information. If you are having difficulty with the system, please contact our office or county office as we are not privy to to the system's access codes and login information. We can discuss with you the grades but cannot grant you access to the system from your home. Thank you for your understanding in this issue.

We do not assign letter grades in first grade simply because children enter first grade on all different levels and it would be unfair to give letter grade that way. Instead we assess their learning into three categories:

Ø (Area of concern): Student is not performing on level and not meeting grade level benchmarks.

(Learning and developing): Student is meeting grade level expectations.

+ (Mastery): Student consistently performs and shows mastery of grade level expectations.

On some of the class work (center work) you may see a check mark, star or smiley face; these are papers that I may have “spot checked” and did not take a grade. Other papers that you may see, there will be one of the symbols marked above or a percentage given and those papers I did take a grade on. As always please review all papers sent home so that you can review with your student the skills we are currently working on in class.
